THE DOPAMINE RESPONSE

What is the dopamine response?

Put simply, when you do something you enjoy, your brain releases a surge of a chemical called dopamine. Dopamine is a neurotransmitter that's sent to your brain's reward centre. This is a cluster of cells that lie under your cerebral cortex. Your cerebral cortex is your brain's information processing centre. Some of its functions include motivation, memory and learning.

Dopamine interacts with another neurotransmitter called glutamate. When dopamine and glutamate interact, they take over a system in your brain responsible for reward‐related learning. This means your brain learns that a particular behaviour results in a pleasurable outcome.

When you repeatedly expose your brain to a trigger that activates the dopamine response, your cerebral cortex learns to develop a drive for the triggering behaviour or substance. You start craving this behaviour/substance.

Over time, your brain begins to develop a tolerance. If the trigger is a behaviour, you'll feel driven to more extreme versions of that behaviour. If it's a substance, you'll need more of it to achieve the same dopamine response. Behaviours or substances that trigger a strong dopamine response may cause addiction.
